What's New

Last Chance!

This is the last opportunity to meet with Judy in 2016!

We have a limited number of spaces available this Spring at Quiltworx Retreats with Judy and Certified Instructor, Tammy Doane!

These retreats qualify as prerequisite for our Certified Shop and Certified Instruction Programs.  To become a Certified Shop, you need one class, and to become a Certified Instructor, you need two classes.

If you are looking to become a Certified Shop in 2017, and have not completed this prerequisite, taking advantage of these workshops is important!

New Releases!

Always Chasing Rainbows Queen

Always Chasing Rainbows Queen

Always Chasing Rainbows Queen is a queen sized adaption of the pattern from our Geese Migrations book.  Created using Shibori Tye-dyed batiks from Anthology, we think it looks amazing!  We’ve published this as an expansion paper set to the original book pattern, which means you must have the Geese Migrations book and orignal set of Always Chasing Rainbows papers.

Celestial Snowfall Tree Skirt

Celestial Snowfall Tree Skirt in Seasonal Portraits

Celestial Snowfall was created in early 2015 as a new Tree Skirt Layout incorporating a Log Cabin Diamond unit and some delicate geese and stars floating in a soft elegant background. The quilt was inspired by snowflake fabrics from Judy and Judel Niemeyer’s Seasonal Portraits Collection, produced by Timeless Treasures. The pattern incorporates all of the latest techniques from Quiltworx and is assembled in a straightforward approach, creating (8) wedges of an octagon, then assembling those together.
Desert Sky

Desert Sky in Wildflowers

Desert Sky was designed using a selection of bright and dark fat quarters from our Wildflowers Collection designed by Judy & Judel Niemeyer with Timeless Treasures. Template Layout sheets were designed and provided with these instruction to speed up the cutting process, allowing you to stack and cut your fat quarters in two groups of nine fabrics. An even amount of yardage is needed for each color. This small wall hanging is definitely one to add to your collection. The skill level ranges from beginner to advanced.

Eight in a Rainbow

Eight in a Rainbow

Eight in a Rainbow is part of the Quiltworx.com Leaf Series of patterns which include curved paper piecing and applique of paper pieced units in the final assembly process.  This latest version includes a brightly colored strip paper pieced border and fabrics from the Wildflowers Collection designed by Judy and Judel Niemeyer with Timeless Treasures.

Fire Island Hosta Wall Quilt

This Fire Island Hosta is also done in a beautiful new colorway showcasing our Wildflowers Collection fabric line. The quilt shown here includes all the foundation papers and a full set of instructions to make the quilt on the cover, which measures 74″ x 74″.  It includes yardage and exact color references to the coversheet, along with information that will allow you to pick your own colors for the different areas of the quilt. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Grandma’s Wedding Ring

This Grandma’s Wedding Ring showcases our Wildflowers Collection fabric line, and uses two different techniques for foundation paper piecing. A technique called Foundation Strip Piecing is used to piece the Wedding Ring arcs. Traditional piecing is used to assemble four squares for the background units. Traditional curved piecing is required to assemble the arcs, centers, and melons.

Lakeshore Snowfall

Lakeshore Snowfall

Lakeshore Snowfall was created in 2015 as a new beginner Tree Skirt incorporating foundation paper piecing with three traditional elements as the Mariner’s Compass, Feathered Star border, and a New York Beauty block. The quilt was inspired from a Batik fabric collection called Lakeshore by Judy and Judel Niemeyer, produced by Timeless Treasures. The pattern incorporates all of the latest techniques from Quiltworx and is assembled in a straightforward approach, creating (8) wedges of an octagon, then assembling those together.

One: Quiltworx.com Leaf Series

One: Quiltworx.com Leaf Series in Wildflowers

Bright new colorways in Wildflowers for our bold, fun to do One: Quiltowrx.com Leaf Series patterns.  A very fast project, this pattern will be one that is made over and over again and can be taught in a one-day workshop as an introduction to paper piecing and Judy’s techniques!

Prismatic Star

Prismatic Star

The latest release of our Prismatic Star pattern showcases the new Hoffman Bali Pops strip set JNBP3, hand selected by Judy.  The blue quilt uses Group 1, while the cream quilt uses Group 2.   The strip piecing process for the Prismatic Star was designed for foundation paper piecing.  Strips are sewn onto foundation paper to complete what we call a ‘Strip Set’.  After the strip sets are completed they are cut apart, rearranged and resewn into a diamond star point.

Splash was designed by Judy and Brad Niemeyer in 2015. A Tonga Batik collection called Lakeshore by Judy and Judel Niemeyer with Timeless Treasures was the inspiration for making this Table Runner. This design was created using a classic block in the Quiltworx collection called the Raindrops, which has been updated to current design standards and used in a variety of different layouts.

MISA: Exciting Quiltworx University Updates

Quiltworx University Logo

Madeline Island School of the Arts (MISA) presents

2016 Quiltworx University with Judy Niemeyer

As the date of our retreat draws nearer, we’re excited to share some great news along with more detailed information about this once-in-a-lifetime event.

We’ve got information about the Certified Instructors, as well as our featured Certified Shop, information about the project, program schedule, daily schedule, and afternoon programs.  Did I mention FREE BERNINA SEWING MACHINES for everyone to use???  Well, read on, and you’ll have a lot more information to help you plan your trip!

Featured Certified Instructors

We’re excited to present the instructors who are attending, and a little bit of their background to help you get to know them.

How do you choose your instructor?  You don’t!  At Quiltworx University, we will have three classrooms set up with around 20 students in each room.  Our instructors will EACH teach in your classroom on three different days.  On the fourth day, you will stay with the instructor that you had on the third day in your workshop to learn to assemble the Quilt.  Judy will be in every classroom, every day, doing demos and providing hands on assistance!

Judy Niemeyer

Kalispell, MT

Judy is an international instructor known for her foundation paper piecing techniques and quilt patterns. Her company, Judy Niemeyer Quilting Inc., has published over 100 foundation paper pieced quilt patterns over the last 15 years. Her quilts and patterns have become well-known both nationally and internationally among quilters and quilt shop owners. The patterns include many sewing techniques commonly referred to as foundation paper piecing, traditional piecing, curved piecing, strip piecing, and appliqué.

Jennifer Eubank

Kodiak, Alaska

Jennifer has been teaching quilting for roughly 18 years, mainly in Kodiak, Alaska. She is a passionate paper piecer who loves to try new patterns, learn new techniques, and then teach others. She originally was introduced to Judy’s patterns a little over 14 years (or so) ago, learning how to make a double wedding ring. Since “finding” Judy’s newer patterns in 2010—starting with the Amazon Star, she had been making and teaching others to make Quiltworx quilts non-stop since then. Jennifer finds herself looking for ways to incorporate “Judy’s way” into all of her quilting classes.

Kristen Bender

Minnetonka, Minnesota

Kristen Bender has been teaching since 2011 and is thrilled to share Judy’s techniques, tips & tricks with others. She loves to see students’ eyes light up with excitement when they learn about them for the first time. Her passion for sewing began in Germany at age 9, when she sat with her mother and sewed clothes for her dolls. After she discovered quilting in 2004 her patchwork addiction was born. When she’s not quilting/teaching, she manages an office full of non-quilters and enjoys spending time with her husband and golden retriever.

Jodie Madison

New Auburn, WisconsinWith a masters degree in physics from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Jodie has spent the last 14 years teaching mathematics to high school students.  During this time, crafts have always been a part of Jodie’s life, including needlepoint, crochet, and hand embroidery to name a few.  Her first quilt was a Trip Around the World quilt made for her sister in 2003.  That was the beginning of her quilting addiction!  She then found a two-day class at a local quilt shop teaching Judy’s Autumn Splendor pattern, and her passion for paper-piecing was ignighted.

Even though Jodie is new to the world of teaching quilting techniques, her passion for instructing students shines through.  Jodie’s fourteen years of teaching in the public school system have allowed her to become flexible and come up with different ways to explain Judy’s techniques.  Her teaching background gives her the ability to take complex quilting techniques and break them down into easy to understand steps.  The ultimate goal of teaching, according to Jodie, is to watch your students walk away with the confidence and knowledge to complete a project successfully.

Featured Certified Shop

Their goal is to provide a welcoming and fun quilt shop where customers come to see and experience the latest fabrics, notions, Bernina sewing/embroidery machines and one stop longarm quilting services.  Their shop fosters a unique atmosphere of sharing, warmth, and friendship that only quilters tend to create.

Not only will Quilters Quest be your on-site vendor with Quiltworx related fabrics, kits, patterns, notions and tools, but they will also be the exclusive provider of kits for this workshop to support the project.

Stay in touch with them as the retreat gets closer.  You can connect with them via their website at www.quiltersquest.com or follow them on Facebook here: www.facebook.com/quiltersquestusa.

As a Bernina dealer, Quilters Quest has also worked with Bernina to bring you the following exciting opportunity to test out a brand new Bernina machine at this event, for FREE!

Leave Your Machine At Home

Brought to you by Quilters Quest and Bernina

There is no need to deal with the hassle of carrying your machine to this event as you will have brand new Bernina machines there to use, for FREE!  As a Bernina dealer, Quilters Quest has coordinated the donation of machines for all of the students and instructors during this event!

These machines are Bernina’s newest models and staff will be on-hand to teach you how to use them!

Event specials will also be available, so if you are considering a new sewing machine in 2016, you may want to wait for Madeline Island so you can test run before you buy at great prices that are tough to find anywhere else!

Feel free to contact Deb Bornella by email for more information about which machines will be provided, along with any questions on kitting or the project.

The Project

Quiltworx University is excited to bring you a dynamic and interactive quilt pattern using Judy’s techniques!  We have used our soon-to-be released Coloring and Design Studio within Quiltster to create three different units (or combination of units) to fit within the following quilt layout.

Lakeshore Sunrise

There are two options for how you will choose your project.

Option 1

Choose the Lakeshore Sunrise Quilt

Choose the recently published pattern called Lakeshore Sunrise and select your own fabrics and/or purchase a kit based on this design!  The above examples of the quilt show colorways that Quiltworx has created out of recent fabric collections using the Quiltworx Coloring and Design Studio in Quiltster (set to Launch in February 2016).  Click on each quilt to go directly to a yardage chart for that design!  Fabrics in each collection will be available through Quilters Quest!  Or, you can wait until Quiltster launches and choose your own colorway!

The Lakeshore Sunrise pattern incorporates Judy’s latest lone star assembly technique and also incorporates a classic flying geese concept in a circular border.  This quilt can be completed at the workshop and is an excellent option for those of you who are new to Quiltworx designs or those of you that don’t like surprises.

Option 2 requires your patience and trust in Quiltworx, com.  But, we HOPE you choose this approach!  Over the coming months, Quiltworx.com will be designing blocks that fit into the Lakeshore Sunrise pattern sections (see the above layout labeled Section 1, Section 2, and Section 3.  We will provide you with THREE options for each of those spaces that can be mixed and matched.  You will also have the option of putting a solid piece in that space, if you’d like.  (See the border for Lakeshore Sunrise as an example of a solid piece).

Because Judy wants to teach everyone NEW ideas at this workshop, we will not be publishing instructions in advance for these blocks.  We will, instead, bring a kit to the workshop that you will pick up there, with everything you will need, including the fabrics, to complete the quilt you have chosen.

We will provide you with several fabric kitting options using Judy and Judel’s latest fabric collections from Timeless Treasures, and three new batik collections that will be released throughout early 2016 called (Petals, Peacock, and Copper).  You will be able to pre-purchase a kit based on your favorite collection from Quilters Quest!  More information on the cost of the kits and the colorways available will be coming in March of 2016.

During the Summer of 2016, we will reveal the THREE block design options for each of the three sections in the layout above (labeled as Section 1, Section 2, and Section 3).  These blocks, designed with a blank option and also those designed for Lakeshore Sunrise will give each student a variety of ways to create their quilt design!

Our goal is to teach you techniques that will drive the future of Quiltworx patterns, not the past.  In other words, if you have attended several workshops in the past, you will see something new in the techniques that we teach at this workshop.

Our goal is for you to have completed at least one full quarter of your quilt before you leave, if not the whole thing, depending on which techniques you choose.

If you choose Option 2, (and we hope that you do!), you will not only go home with a beautiful design, but it will be truly unique to you!  Mostly, we believe you will have great fun!

Weeping Willow Tonga Treat Strip Set

The following two quilts were made using a limited release strip set called the Weeping Willow Strip Set designed by Judy and Judel Niemeyer, with Timeless Treasures.

The strips are Tonga Batiks, all with the same print, but in 20 different colors, with 2 of each strip included the package.

Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones in Weeping Willow Batiks.

Stepping Stones was designed for all skill levels making this a fun and easy quilt for any beginner or advanced quilter to make up in just a few days. The pattern was republished in November of 2015.

Wisteria Lane

Wisteria Lane in Weeping Willow Batiks

Wisteria Lane, a very unique display of color introduced as a Chevron Wall Hanging, will add a splash of color to any Modern or Southwestern living décor as a Wall Hanging, Couch Throw, Table Topper or Bed  Runner.

Lakeshore Batiks Collection

This next quilt features Lakeshore Batik fabrics which were designed around some of Northwest Montana’s most famous lake shores, where waters are a rich turquoise color, the glacial rock deposits are deep reds and purples and shine brightly in the clear mountain waters where wheat fields line the shore.  Stay tuned for more beautiful quilts created using this bright collection.

Lakeshore Sunrise

Lakeshore Sunrise

The Lakeshore Sunrise pattern was designed after the Prismatic Star using the same techniques, adding a border, and setting the stage for a wide range of quilt sizes that feature the exploded lone star design.  A circling flying geese block was designed to frame the exploded star and  a large open background was added to showcase quilting designs.

Robert Kaufman Fabrics

The next quilts have been long awaited and were created using Robert Kaufman Collections.

Southern Belles

Southern Belles

The Southern Belles pattern was designed to feature our newest lone star technique using 1-inch diamonds to complete a 20″ block. We bordered the blocks with a very traditional antique quilt layout consisting of tiny spiked borders and floating stars. The quilt was designed with two different border options and two different sizes. The overall impact is a soft, vintage deep south quilt with no Y-seams, simple construction, only three different techniques, and will be available soon in expanded sizes. Digitized Quilting Designs are also available for this layout!

Southern Belles was created using the Penny and Friends fabric line, or choose your favorite line of vintage/reproduction fabrics!

Into the Northwoods

Into the Northwoods

Into the Northwoods was designed around the Robert Kaufman Batik Collection, Northwoods.  Robert Kaufman called us and expressed interest in our Glacier Pines quilt design, so we took advantage of this and started designing new 20″ blocks to fit in the center of the set-in borders.  This pattern is first in a line of designs that will show different 20″ center designs, which will ultimately be published through our Charm Elements program, to mix and match and make your favorite layout.

Northern Star Table Topper

Cut Loose Press Pattern by Cindi McCracken Designs,

Judy and Judel Niemeyer along with Timeless Treasures, are excited to unveil their newest cotton and batik collections, Wildflowers and Lakeshore Batiks.

With the Wildflowers Collection you’ll be like a kid in a candy store.  The bright candy colored fabrics feature a wide variety of wildflowers and garden creatures that come together in a bright rainbow pallet that make for show-stopping quilts.

In contrast, our Lakeshore Batiks feature fabrics were designed around some of Northwest Montana’s most famous lake shores, where waters are a rich turquoise color, the glacial rock deposits are deep reds and purples and shine brightly in the clear mountain waters where wheat fields line the shore.

You won’t want to miss being the first to see all of the stunning quilts showcasing these two beautiful fabric lines at the Timeless Treasures Schoolhouse.  With almost 20 projects to launch these two collections, and more to come from both over the coming months (including additional coordinating batik collections and an expanded line of Wildflower Cottons in the spring), this schoolhouse will set the stage for several months of project planning for Quiltworx!  If your customers are avid Quiltworx fans, you’ll want to be here so you are ready to serve as their go-to resource!

Amazon Star

Amazon Star 2015

The Amazon Star has been recently updated in a new color palette using Malam Batiks designed by Jinny Beyer, with RJR fabrics!  The wonderful spring inspired color palette is reminiscent of lilac flowers, and is a refreshing departure from the original color palette of the Amazon Star in rich golds, greens, and browns.  This quilt sample was created by Certified Instructor, Kristen Bender!

Cozy Cabin Comforts

Cozy Cabin Comforts

The Cozy Cabin Comforts pattern is a variation on one of the Geese Migrations book designs called Cabin Comforts designed by Certified Shop, Cottonpicker’s Quilt Shop located in Chardon, OH.  The updated design allows for quilters to complete only some of the geese and star blocks, which finish to 24″, and fill the open spaces with a variety of 24″ block options to create something unique and different.  We used fabrics from our Seasonal Portraits fabric collection to create a window to Northwest Montana.

Maple Leaf Flurries

Maple Leaf Flurries

The Maple Leaf Flurries is a wall quilt size version of the Indian Summer Pattern!  This pattern was created using a simple color palette from our Seasonal Portraits Collection to accentuate the maple leaf element of the quilt pattern and provide a great introductory pattern using one of our simpler foundation units!

Prickly Pinecones Tree Skirt

Prickly Pinecones Tree Skirt

This pattern is the first design in our collection of patterns to teach one of Judy’s latest innovative techniques, the basted registration point.  You’ll never misalign large units again using this approach! The perfectly spaced spikes, rich, chocolate and vanilla color palette (from our Seasonal Portraits Collection), and log cabin center star are sure to make your Christmas Celebration just a little more inviting!  We are sure to have one under our tree this year!

Starling Murmurations

Starling Murmurations

Starling Murmurations is a companion pattern to the Geese Migrations book.  You must purchase the book to get the instructions for each of the units in the pattern, but from there, you can follow the instructions included here to put together this fun, introductory, and simple pattern using the large stars and a variety of geese blocks!  The cover quilt was made using Hoffman Batiks and the colors mimic a pasture of poppies and swirling starlings, creating a phenomenon called “Murmurations”.

Summer Solstice

Summer Solstice

Judy and Judel Niemeyer’s Seasonal Portraits fabrics were used to create the latest cover sheet version of one of our most popular patterns called Summer Solstice!  Featured fabrics were designed around some of Northwest Montana’s most famous lakeshores, where waters are a rich turquoise color, the glacial rock deposits are deep reds and purples and shine brightly in the clear mountain waters where wheat fields line the shore.  Our Mariner’s Compass inspired solids in the collection are a wonderful reminder of the summer sailboat races across Flathead Lake, with every fabric embracing the season of Summer.

Tea Leaf Table Runner

Tea Leaf Table Runner

Due to its popularity as a staple in our Leaf Collection, the Tea Leaf Table Runner cover sheet was in need of an update using Malam Batiks designed by Jinny Beyer from RJR Fabrics. The colorway was selected and the samples were made by Certified Instructor and Certified Shop Owner, Shahena Fredricks, of Cozy Quilts, in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada.

Three Quiltworx.com Leaf Series
Three: Quiltworx.com Leaf Series

Three: Quiltworx Leaf Series, created using our Seasonal Portraits Collection, adds a new leaf design to our Leaf Series Pattern Collection, incorporating three fat leaves is a fun wall quilt concept with the leaves lined up in a row. A curved stem is used to join the two leaf blocks.  Judy introduces her NEW Registrations Points Technique, simplifying the process of finding your match points on long seam lines perfectly every time!

Rocky Mountain Bear Claw Table Runner and Pillows

Rocky Mountain Bear Claw Table Runner and Pillows

The Rocky Mountain Bear Claw Table Runner and Pillows utilize a squared up version of one of our newest blocks, a viscous, bright grizzly bear claw featured in the Rocky Mountain Bear Claw quilt pattern (also available for purchase through Quiltworx.com).  Fabrics from our Seasonal Portraits, Reclaimed West, and coordinating batik collections were used for these projects.

Butterfly Barnyard Baby Blanket

Butterfly Barnyard Baby Blanket

Butterfly Barnyard mixes the softness of the 1930s, with an updated, classic border design of repeating spikes to create a fun “fence-inspired” layout, inspired by a barnyard. With appliquéd butterflies to offset the background, you create an adorable baby quilt that is sure to keep every baby it touches wrapped in love.  We used a reproduction line by Darlene Zimmerman for Robert Kaufman Fabrics called Penny & Friends and selected two contrasting prints for a simple, modern layout of just one Quiltworx border block.

Craftsy Dresden Plate

Craftsy Dresden Plate

Announcing the Quiltworx Dresden Plate!  This is the first Quiltworx block exclusively designed with instructions available in the excellent Visual Learning Environment offered by Craftsy.com.  As a departure from our current publication process where patterns include full instructions and papers, the Quiltworx Dresden Plate must be obtained by purchasing a workshop from Craftsy, taught by Certified Instructor, Jackie Kunkel, then either downloading papers as part of class materials (downloadable files are only available through Craftsy.com, after purchasing the class), or purchasing the optional newsprint packages from either Quiltworx.com or Craftsy.com.
