Drunkards Wave or Gummie Dots

Pre-Class Instructions: Purchase your pattern for Drunkards Wave or Gummie Dots. Please read the instructions in your pattern before coming to class.

You have two options to choose from for the preclass cutting instructions. The first option is to follow the cutting instructions in your pattern and cut out the whole quilt.

The second is to follow the cutting instructions below. If you cut from the list below you will need to complete the cutting for the rest of your quilt after the class is over.

Which every option you choose you must make sure you come to class with the papers, templates, and fabric strips cut and ready to use in class. If these steps are not completed, it will be difficult for you to catch up and participate during the workshop.

Foundation Papers: This quilt uses one (1) foundation unit. This unit is called Unit-S. Prepare one page of foundation papers by trimming the excess paper from around the outside cutting line on each unit by approximately 1/8″. It is much easier to position the fabric under the foundation paper when the excess paper has been trimmed away.

Template Layout Sheet and Templates: Make eight (8) copies of the Template Layout Sheet found on page 10 in the instruction booklet. Note: Take your pattern with you to get your copies. Some places are a little sticky about making copies off my patterns. Permission has been granted on the template layout sheet to make copies.

Cutting Instructions Unit S: Cut one (1) 5-3/4″ by 42″ strip selvage to selvage from each of the four (4)light background fabrics used for Unit-S.

Dark Spikes: The pieces for the spikes are cut with your ruler. You will not need a template for this piece. Cut one (1) 7″ by 42″ strip from each of the eight (8) dark fabrics. These pieces can be crosscut in class into the 2\” by 7\” rectangles.

Four-patch: Follow the cutting and sewing instructions in your pattern and bring the completed four-patch units to class.

Center Template: Cut one (1) 12″ by 42″ strip selvage to selvage from your striped fabric for the center template. If you are not using a striped fabric as shown in Gummie Dots then cut (1) 7\” by 42\” strip selvage to selvage from the fabric you chose for the Center Template fabric.

Large Border Fabric: Cut one (1)7-1/2\” by 42\” strip selvage to selvage fom your border fabric.

Inner Border Fabric: Cut one (1)1-/2\” by 42\” strip selvage to selvage fom your border fabric.

In this class you will have the opportunity to learn some of the techniques that I teach and write about in my patterns. I teach a chain-piecing process for foundation paper-piecing. This process is possible because all the fabric pieces are pre-cut using a template layout sheet. I also teach speed-cutting techniques for both paper and fabric. I teach sewing and pressing techniques that will enable you to do foundation paper piecing, curved piecing, and traditional piecing.

Extra foundation papers are available for this quilt. Several options for sizes and layouts are included with the purchase of the extra foundation packages. The information needed to order extra foundation papers can be found on my web page.
