Quilt Along with Judy!

Meet the Quiltworx Team!

Our Quiltworx University events wouldn’t be possible without the help of these incredible Certified Instructors and of course Judy! Their creativity, energy, and extraordinary quilting skills are at your service throughout this event. From leading classes for the Arctic Star blocks, to answering questions, and offering master tips one-on-one, they are there for YOU!

Here’s a little bit more about them:

Judy Niemeyer

Judy Niemeyer • Owner of Quiltworx

Kalispell, MT

Judy is an international instructor known for her foundation paper piecing techniques and quilt patterns. Her company, Judy Niemeyer Quilting Inc., has published over 300 foundation paper pieced quilt patterns over the last 25 years. Her quilts and patterns have become well-known both nationally and internationally among quilters and quilt shop owners. The patterns include many sewing techniques commonly referred to as foundation paper piecing, traditional piecing, curved piecing, strip piecing, and appliqué.

Ana Blickenderfer

CI Ana Blickenderfer

Charles City, IA

Ana started sewing clothing at the age of 9 for 4-H. At age 16, she started hand quilting and binding. By 21, she had started a scrapbooking and quilting business. Making quilts and quilting on commission was in higher demand, so in 2010 she decided to focus on quilting. Since 2008, Ana has made over 600 quilted items for others. She discovered Quiltworx online in 2013, by 2014 she was looking all over for a class to learn to paper piece.

By the end of 2019, Ana has completed over 50 Quiltworx patterns and excitedly shares her love of paper piecing with others.

In September 2017, Ana opened a home training center/studio in Charles City, Iowa to teach and carry Quiltworx patterns, fabric by Judy and Judel, a huge selection of Moda Grunge, along with basic paper piecing supplies. Ana loves to color kits using Quiltster, cuts them down to strips for her students and even offers kit cutting services! She offers classes nearly every Saturday, with Technique of the Month and Judy Support Group alternating years, offers E2E long arm quilting and binding services. AND NOW, she’s building a barn for sewing retreats and a new retail space!

Find the most up-to-date schedule on www.Facebook.com/ SewThat. The training center is closed Memorial Day through Labor Day, while everyone is out enjoying summer, but www.icansewthat.com is always open! With online classes starting soon.

Karen Caduff

CI Julie Connell

St. Peters, MO

Julie has been sewing and making garments since 6th grade learning the craft from her Mom. Her passion for textiles has never faltered as she went on to study Textile Design at the University of Iowa, and designed her own dress patterns. Throughout raising her 5 young children, Julie often would sew their clothing and Halloween costumes, and her interests and passion for fabrics, creativity and playing with color continued to expand.

The art of quilting and the quilts themselves were always something admired by Julie, especially the fine hand technique, the attention to detail and the numerous small pieces that it entailed. It was this admiration and inspiration of these skills that moved Julie to take a hand quilting class in 1993, after the birth of her youngest son. She was instantly hooked!

In 2014, while working at the fabric store Batiks Plus, Julie tried her first Quiltworx online class, Craftsy (now Bluprint) taught by Certified Instructor Jackie Kunkel. Soon after, she traveled to Montana to participate in Certified Shop training with Judy Niemeyer. Learning Judy’s organization and step-by-step process became addicting and was a truly amazing training experience for Julie.

She applied to the Certified Instructor program and has made over 40 Quiltworx projects from table toppers to large queen size quilts. She has shared her knowledge of this foundation paper piecing process working with quilt shops, guilds and private groups in classroom settings in Missouri, Iowa, Illinois and Tennessee. Julie loves sharing her passion with other quilters and looks forward to doing so for years to come.

Tammy Gardner

CI Tammy Gardner

Cassopolis, MI

Tammy began quilt making in 1989 as a way to continue her great-grandmother’s legacy. She has always been a lover of puzzles and math so quilt making was a perfect fit for her. Around 2008 Tammy discovered Judy Niemeyer’s patterns, her first pattern to experience was Which Way’s North. By the time she made her second Quiltworx quilt, Feathered Goose, she realized she loved the process, organization, and accuracy the patterns provide so much that they quickly became her favorites. She has continued to make Judy’s patterns, has won many ribbons for her work, and has an extensive collection of patterns awaiting her attention.

Tammy’s degree in Education from Purdue University has helped to provide her with the knowledge and methods necessary to be an effective, confident, and patient quilt instructor, able to teach all skill levels from beginner to advanced. Tammy began doing demos and presentations for her quilt guilds and sewing group around 20 years ago. She has taught quilt sampler classes and paper piecing classes at local quilt shops and has been leading a monthly paper-piecing club since early in 2014. While she has taught patterns from several paper-piecing pattern designers in her club, her focus has primarily been on Quiltworx patterns. Her students and club members have successfully completed many paper-pieced projects over the years.

Tammy is willing to teach one day, multi-day, and monthly classes, in order to provide you with all types of instruction, demos, trunk shows or retreats. She is also willing to travel; cruises and long-distance retreats are not outside the realm of possibility. She is looking forward to working with you so you can have a successful class or event.

Nancy Kloster

CI Nancy Kloster

Saint Clair Shores, MI

Nancy has been quilting for more than 30 years. She was drawn to the efficient and organized process of paper piecing the “Quiltworx” way. She has been teaching over 10 years, and her students love her calm personality and ability to teach all levels of students.

Nancy enjoys all aspects of quilting from selecting fabrics, longarm quilting and most of all teaching. She loves to see her student’s project come together, and believes every student can succeed and is thrilled to see them gain confidence as they complete their projects.

Kristin Bender

CI Kristin Bender

Minnetonka, MN

Kristen Bender has been teaching since 2011 and is thrilled to share Judy’s techniques, tips & tricks with others. She loves to see students’ eyes light up with excitement when they learn about them for the first time.

Her passion for sewing began in Germany at age 9, when she sat with her mother and sewed clothes for her dolls. After she discovered quilting in 2004 her patchwork addiction was born. When she’s not quilting/teaching, she manages an office full of non-quilters and enjoys spending time with her husband and golden retriever.

There are three options for selecting the pattern and your fabrics:

OPTION 1 – PURCHASE A PUBLISHED PATTERN AND PREPARE YOUR OWN PROJECT: Coming in July of 2022, two patterns will be available including the Cinnamon Sticks pattern for $79.50, or a Sparkle pattern for $67.50. They can be purchased through Quiltworx or Yoder Department Store once published in July. If you would like to use Quiltster to design your quilt, templates will be available in July as well. Once you have purchased your pattern, you will choose your own fabrics from your stash or as desired. With this option, you will be responsible for cutting your fabrics to the strip size, labeling them, and bagging them so that you are ready for class.

OPTION 2 – CHOOSE A PRE-DESIGNED KIT: Select one of the Arctic Star Mixer kits, exclusive to this event!  There are several pre-designed kit options that have been created for you to choose from. You will have a Quiltster account for six months (from sign up) as part of your event and will need to use it to purchase your project if you choose one of these options.

We have not finalized all kit pricing at this time, but to give you an idea, your kit will include the following:

  • A pattern, ranging from $70 to $140 depending on the size and number of papers required.
  • A kit with fabrics included ($12.99 a yard), pre-cut for you to the strip size, (small patterns will range from $175, with larger designs being as much as $500 or more if you purchase backing).
  • A 17% kit cutting fee and state tax for Indiana (as appropriate) will be included so the shop and Quiltworx staff can prepare your kit for the workshop. Since the kits will be delivered to the event, you will not have any shipping costs!

OPTION 3 – DESIGN YOUR OWN CUSTOM QUILT:  Create your own completely customized quilt, where you pick the combination of blocks for your quilt and your favorite fabric collections from the list offered by Yoder Department Store! If you haven’t received it already, any day (or upon sign-up!) you’ll receive a 6 month subscription to Quiltster, allowing you the opportunity to mix and match blocks and fabrics in 3 different quilt sizes to achieve your perfectly unique quilt!  You may use Quiltster, or contact Judel Niemeyer for an additional design fee ($40/design) to help you create your perfect quilt.

All kits will be based on a yardage price of $12.99 per yard, regular price, however, kits purchased for this event will be discounted at 10%! If you are interested in backing and binding, you will have the option to purchase this at the time of kit purchase. Backing and binding purchased with the kit will be discounted 20%. All local sales will be subject to the 7% sales tax in Indiana. A separate email will be coming in early June with information on ordering, so have fun designing in the meantime and stay tuned for more information on kit purchases. Kit ordering must be completed no later than August 1, 2022.

Cinnamon Sticks or Sparkle Patterns

Coming July 2022!

These patterns can be ordered through Quiltworx or Yoder Department Store and will be available in Quiltster for coloring in July. In the meantime, click on the images below to view the kitting sheets and fabric requirements. If choosing blocks and fabrics seems overwhelming, we’re also offering the following exclusive fabric kits only available to event attendees.

If you select this option, we’ll cut the kit, and prepare it for the class. We’ll bring the kits to the workshop for you so there is no preparation needed!

To order these options, you’ll need to find the one you want in Quiltster (click on Quilt Planner from your Dashboard, then scroll down to the bottom and click the blue Enter button next to Quiltworx University Shipshewana 2022 to get started). Once you have opened the desired project (by clicking Customize) and given it a name, save it to your account.

Whether you use Quiltster on your own, or have us do it, your finalized quilt kit will be prepared for you and brought to the event for you to complete! No preparation on your end will be needed!

Your options for blocks and fabrics are shown below. If you have any questions about how to use Quiltster, we strongly encourage you to visit the Quiltster Youtube Channel and watch some tutorials before you get started.

Here’s a valuable video (not directly related to this project, but related to the Quiltworx University Planning process) which gives you a great walk-through of how the program works. While the video below is in an older version of Quiltster that looks slightly different than yours, once you click into the Quilt Editor, the process works the same.
