| Diamond Wedding Ring
The first time I saw the layout for
the Diamond Wedding Ring pattern was back in the 80's. A lady approached
me to finish a quilt that her mother had started. She called the quilt
"The Indian Wedding Ring." I agreed to finish it, not realizing that it
would turn out to be the most intricate pattern I had ever encountered.
I was absolutely thrilled when it was completed! During that time of my
life, I had no idea what paper piecing was and I have often thought back
on my first experience with the pattern, wishing I knew then what I do
now.
Several years later I discovered foundation
paper piecing, and started publishing patterns. I knew this was one I
had to design and bring back to life. After a considerable amount thought,
a preliminary design of the "Diamond Wedding Ring" was drafted in 1996
but left uncompleted.
A few years later I received
a phone call from a lady who just completed the Wedding Star and wanted
to know if I had ever seen the Triangle Wedding Ring, which I discovered
was the same setting as the Diamond Wedding Ring. Our conversation motivated
me to revisit the pattern and simplify the setting by using foundation
paper for the arc an also as a stabilizer when sewing on the tiny center
triangle background pieces. The arcs are set together in a large diamond
allowing the units to be sewn together using an old fashioned setting
for a six pointed star. This quilt requires some skill in curved piecing,
set in seams, and you had better be willing to follow the directions closely.
I've used a strip piecing method for the arcs, added some extra points
behind the center star, and used a variation of colors not only in the
arcs but the backgrounds as well to compliment this design. Despite the
fact that the centers for the backgrounds are all cut on bias, this quilt
is constructed to simplify the setting of the blocks and can be constructed
by any beginner with a little help and patience.
