The Twisted Star was designed by my son, Bradley Niemeyer, to meet the requirements for his final project in a college engineering economics course. The project instructions were to develop a product using an engineering tool that could be the basis for a small business. With a little (okay, maybe a lot) of coaxing from his mother, Brad decided to draft and design another quilt pattern for my business. Bradley started with a simple idea of setting a star into a triangle. The stars, although dazzling by themselves, didn't create a quilt with much energy. He started toying with ways to tie the stars together. A surprisingly simple, yet attractive, interlocking border was created by placing a half melon sliced in six pieces into each side of the triangle. This made the star quite distinctive from others due to the mismatched points that it created, three being long and three being short. This mismatched quality was very appealing as it gave the appearance of a star that had been twisted upon itself, giving rise to the name, "Twisted Star." The foundation piecing units are very simple to make. The ribbons are made using a method of strip piecing with foundation paper. The curved piecing level of this quilt is defiantly at a beginner lever. The background for this quilt was created by blending the value, texture, and color of several fabrics.
