Handicraft has always been central to my life. My mother and my grandma taught me knitting, embroidering, crocheting and sewing. As a teenager, I sewed a lot of my clothes myself and later on, I did the same for our four children.
While studying, I discovered a quilt magazine and decided to build a quilt one day! Leaving the university as a teacher for disabled children, there was no job at this time. So, we just worked on building our family (a great period that I’ll never forget).
In 1998, our youngest daughter was two years old, and finally the time had come to start quilting again. In the beginning, I studied magazines and books. Following what I learned there, I offered my first classes to others.
After practicing quilting for a few years, people asked me to teach them quilting at an adult education centre. Gradually, I made my decision not to continue the workshops, but instead, open up a quilt store. This was my long-time dream and because there was no quilt shop nearby, I founded my store in September 2003. I have been a shop owner ever since and teaching workshops in my own studio. I have also designed my own quilts and worked for different quilt magazines.
I have studied with many great quilters throughout my career, including Paula Nadelstern, Yoko Saito, Bernadette Mayr, Edith Nusser-Lampe, Charlotte Yde, Gisela Hafer, and most recently, Judy Niemeyer.
Paper Piecing was always one of my favourite passions and so I was extremely delighted to receive the chance to become a Certified Instructor for Judy Niemeyer’s pattern design company, Quiltworx.com. From the very start, I was inspired and excited by her designs and after an intense training program that has taken me eight months to complete, I am convinced her techniques and process are the key to any aspiring quilter’s success, no matter skill level or experience. Learning this process will help you create heirloom quilts easily and with confidence.
I am proud to be the first German Certified Instructor to mediate Judy’s expert knowledge. It has been a great challenge and I can’t wait to share what I have learned with my future students.
Sorry, there are no classes scheduled for Bernhild Schröder at this time.
